MEIDEFSEC, Our trusted OEM partner was tasked with solving a critical challenge in the design and production of a Radio Frequency Distribution Unit (RFDU). The original specification called for a 5–6U unit using connectorized components. Instead of simply delivering within the given constraints, our engineering team proposed an innovative solution that not only exceeded performance expectations but also redefined the production standard for similar systems.
Challenge
The project demanded a compact, cost-effective, and highly reliable RFDU that could also manage heat efficiently under sustained operation. The challenge lay in achieving these requirements without compromising electrical performance or long-term durability in mission-critical defence environments.
Solution
By leveraging advanced design expertise and Surface Mount Technology (SMT), the RFDU was transformed into a sleek 1U drawer, cutting the unit size by more than half. A custom-engineered Printed Circuit Board (PCB) was developed to optimise electrical performance while ensuring rugged durability.
SMT Integration: The shift to SMT components reduced the footprint, enhanced performance, optimised heat dispersion, and lowered overall production costs.
Custom PCB Circuit: Specially designed for the RFDU’s unique specifications, ensuring peak electrical performance and long-term reliability.
Cost-Efficiency: The redesign achieved a 50% reduction in production costs, surpassing the client’s budget expectations.
Reliability: Enhanced Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) thanks to improved component efficiency and thermal management.
